How To Make Window Frosted Look

This elementary mode to frost a window for privacy is one of my favorite home hacks e'er!

This DIY is so elementary and cheap, and helps with an abrasive privacy trouble that would exist expensive or messy to fix otherwise. I've actually shared this before (a looong time agone), but it's 1 that'due south worth sharing again!

I've used this for frosting glass on drinking glass doors and interior windows and it is a great, inexpensive solution. Plus, information technology's easily removed if you lot ever change your mind.

You can easily do this to whatever flat glass surface with very few tools and a little time.

The first time I did this was on our glass pantry door ten years ago:

I was able to make that glass pantry door opaque for side by side to nothing! (Although getting the film placed perfectly on those panes was a PAIN.)

A few helpful readers told me about this trick forever ago. Who knew transparent contact paper is the easiest and cheapest way to make a window individual? I was and then pleasantly surprised when this actually worked!

We had a big bath window in the sometime house that I made private with this as well. I didn't remember I'd need to do it again, until we moved into this business firm and realized the powder room window was placed in a less than ideal spot:

Ha! Just...non the best. I've ever felt for our guests peculiarly. 😝

I don't know what took me so long, but I finally did this private window fob once again and it worked like a charm.

Now there are a few ways to do this, merely I promise yous this is the easiest. You tin can buy frosted window moving picture, but those options are more plush. You can as well use a frosted glass spray paint, but that's messy -- you take to worry nigh overspray and fumes...and it won't hold up well over time on a window or door that gets a lot of use.

Yous tin likewise use a drinking glass etching cream to do this permanently, but I would only endeavour that in extreme cases.

For this DIY method of frosting glass, you lot'll need transparent matte Contact paper:

You'll just need a spray canteen with water, scissors and some way to push button out the bubbles.

Before y'all start, give the window a good cleaning with glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.

Because this newspaper isn't broad plenty for the window, I cut the pieces in the size of the window panes. Yous can likewise cut them in strips, which is how I did it on the window in our old bath.

The helpful filigree on the paper makes it easy to cut straight lines. Yous really don't have to be exact with it, especially for a window.

Dose the window with h2o, then spread the contact paper over the surface of the glass. The h2o is a must -- it makes it easy to maneuver so yous tin can get it only how you want it.

Yous'll have TONS of bubbles, but they will push button right out! I always use these pan scrapers, but a debit card or squeegee volition work also. Y'all but demand something with a polish side to push the air bubbles out of the sides. (I leave some space around each piece so I can exercise that.)

This time, the vinyl looked like this a day or so after I installed it:

Just those marks disappeared over a few days. And so odd! They almost expect like bubbles, but aren't. I remember information technology could have been excess water.

UPDATE: This is how the window looks two years later...the contact paper is nonetheless in perfect condition:

I only placed it on the lesser part of the window. You will not be able to see through information technology -- everything will be blurry. When I did this last time I thought it would bother us not existence able to see out, just it never did.

You lot can't control the opacity of the window like you can with other DIY options, but I have never establish it necessary to do more anyway.

Here'south a look at the finished window from the outside:

As y'all can see, we can still see out of the meridian part of the window. ;)

Too, if you stand right upwardly on it like I am above (I'thou leaning confronting the window) I'm blurred but non overly so. But if you lot're just inches away y'all can't see much (at nighttime with a light on you'll encounter movement for sure).

I took a picture of our son standing abroad from the window slightly and couldn't run into him at all. I thought he had moved abroad before I could take the photograph!:

I also love that you really can't tell one-half of the window is covered from the outside. I'1000 considering doing this on some other bathroom windows as well!

Here'southward how it looks from the inside:

This method is also hands cleaned -- yous don't have to infant information technology. I spray information technology with glass cleaner and wipe like the rest of the windows.

At that place are and so many places this would be useful!

  • If you have sidelights by your front door and want privacy, this is easier and more aesthetically pleasing than defunction.
  • It'south a GREAT pick for renter's -- just peel it off when you're washed.
  • This could even be used on glass shower doors, just exist sure to place it on the outside of the doors.

I can whip this quick project out in ten minutes and a whole roll is merely a few bucks -- ane roll will cover a whole door or multiple windows easily. Have you lot ever tried this easy individual window trick?
